The Gallery
The gallery is a record of migrant women’s shared experience of walking around Halle (Saale), and of being re-minded of their ‘nearby’ back home –a part of them that was torn from them. In these walks, they shared common experiences while creating a record of their unique ways of seeing the city.

Passageway next to TK-Max to the language school on the market square

2023

Ceren Deniz

Like many migrant women in Halle, I walked through this passageway every day for a while to go to my language course and saw my reflection in the mirror as I passed through. I still have the feeling that I'm walking along a long, narrow street and watching myself while I speak German.

The city of Halle is small, but I like the city and the way the European buildings are designed. This photo was taken from the top of the Marktkirche and I liked the view.

The aeroplane above the market square

2023

Alex Struk

When I arrived in Halle, it took me a long time to get used to aeroplanes. I come from Kharkiv and there was a large international airport in my city. My city is 40 kilometres from the border with Russia. Russian aeroplanes flew very low over us. It was very loud. And that always meant more destruction and death. My girlfriend has lived in Silberhöhe for a year. She hears Leipzig Airport and still sleeps with earplugs. The aeroplane in the photo is a civilian plane. And that's wonderful.

A nice quiet evening in Steinweg

2023

Alex Struk

I've been coming to yoga at the Franckeschen Foundation every Thursday for over a year now. It was very difficult for our trainer at the beginning. We didn't understand a word she was saying, so she had to demonstrate each simple exercise several times. We were very embarrassed in front of the other Germans, but she always smiled. She ended every yoga class with the sentence "Dear ones, I wish you a nice quiet evening, a nice week and stay healthy. Namaste." That was the first sentence I understood in the yoga class and memorised in German. I see these rails every Thursday evening when I leave the Franckeschen Foundation after yoga.

The shoes of the Ukrainian girl in the city park

2023

Alex Struk

This girl is playing with the fountain in the city park. Since 24 February 2022, I have seen many photos from Ukraine of little shoes without children. The rocket from Russia reaches my city in 30-40 seconds. When I see a child playing, I always think about the children who can't play. This is my big integration problem: to allow myself to live in a safe city. This is a photo about children who will never wear shoes again. Who were killed or injured by Russian aggression. This girl is playing in the city park. I am happy for her.

I took and selected this photo because it has several meanings for me. Here you can see the immigration office building in the background. But more important to me are the sky in the period just before autumn and the green trees. On the right there is a beautiful lake where I always go in spring and summer to meet up with my friends to chat, spend time together or do some sports in nature.

Paulusviertel

2023

Aida Alymbaeva

In this photo, you can see the facades of the still unrenovated concrete houses that stand in the Paulusviertel neighbourhood. On this golden autumn day, when the sun was already approaching dusk, I suddenly saw the breath-taking yet humble beauty of this tree covering the rubbish bins. The light of the setting sun fell on the foliage. I realised I could choose what I wanted to see: the drab concrete and the bins or the magical light of the sun and the spreading beauty of the tree. And what do you see?

The most beautiful graffiti in Halle. It shows the sights of the city, its history and the people who have lived in or visited Halle.

The weather is always as surprising and unpredictable as life itself. As a refugee of war, I'm used to changes in life, but not yet to very fluctuating temperatures.
